That is fascinating ! Auguri to your nonna on her recovery ! What part of Italy is she from and was she born here or in the US ? Can you tell me a bit more about her recipes ?

My Nonne is 103! She recently (November 2012) fell and broke her ankle which landed her in a rehab center. She can no longer live on her own and we are in the process of cleaning out her apartment. But while doing so we found all of her handwritten, in Italian of course, recipes! Plan to translate into english and publish them for the family. It’s a great find because she always told us she never used a recipe and we never saw her use one. And while we have tried to watch her cook and write things down, her originals are so much better!

Brava ! If we do not document, these precious memories will all be gone, in a sniff. Rome is already close to unrecognizable for my own mother, who is your mother’s age. She began she life by being born at home with the queen’s obstetrician. Mamma mia ! I am glad to know about your blog and look forward to reading it, I suspect regularly. Thanks !

Great post and blog. My mother is almost 89 and I decided to start my blog ‘The Good, the Bad and the Italian’ last May mainly to remember the anecdotes associated with growing up Italian-Australian (in Sydney, Australia). As she grows older I’m becoming greedier for information about certain things I don’t recall about childhood and it’s great to be able to write about them on my blog. cheers

How right you are Heather — what an insightful and charming observation. Etruscan and Roman sights you would not otherwise see well (if all all) come into view. A magical time to be exploring ancient sights tucked into the countryside.

You are so right! And I can add to your excellent list: walking in the woods with the leaves off the trees and the undergrowth died down allows you to see the ruins from a past life and vast panoramas that are hidden from sight from April to November.
