Insider’s Italy and the Acqua di San Giovanni

This evening, as on every eve of San Giovanni—going back many years now—I gathered flowers from my terrace and made my Acqua di San Giovanni.

Acqua di San Giovanni, or Saint John’s Water, is a cherished Italian tradition. On the night of June 23rd, the eve of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, herbs and flowers are steeped in water and left outdoors to soak in the moonlight and the dew.

Some say the mixture must include 24 varieties, others insist on 100. Some say only women must do the gathering. The essentials often include St. John’s Wort, lavender, rosemary, sage, and rose petals—but there are no strict rules. This year, I added jasmine, mint and delfinium.

As with many Italian traditions, the ritual varies slightly from region to region, and even family to family. But the date never changes—so close to the summer solstice, when plants are said to hold their greatest energy and potency.

At dawn, the water is used to wash your face and hands. Babies may be bathed in it. My lagotto romagnolo, Teddy, gets his face washed—and all day he smells delicious.

Each year, I look forward to this moment. Wherever I am, it’s a chance to take stock of the natural beauty around me. The colors, the scents, the textures—each June, the gathering is completely different.

All across Italy, this tradition is interpreted anew.

For 35 years, my family company, Insider’s Italy, has introduced travelers to quietly powerful experiences like this—designing journeys that are deeply personal, epicurean, and full of delight.

It is my joy to share my Italy with you—and the traditions I love most.

Buon San Giovanni a tutti!
