I love gardens — perhaps because I grew up in Rome on a terrace and have the great fortune of a mother who loved gardening. How fortunate that so many of our travelers love gardens too.

From camellia gardens to ancient Roman gardens, to rose gardens to traditional formal Tuscan gardens, to herb gardens, to mazes, to Anglo-Italian collaborations to late 20th century gardens.

Personalized garden itinerary

We’re happy to put together a personalized garden itinerary for you. Unlike organized garden tours, where you are obliged to travel in the company of others and keep to a group’s travel plan and rhythm, our independent garden tours are designed just for you.

Hotels and inns fit your individual style and requirements. Many of these inns are themselves sited in extraordinary gardens.

For a number of the gardens that you visit, we will put you in direct contact with owners or the head gardener who will be delighted take you around. And if you wish, we’ll arrange for your own personal garden docent to travel with you, a student of Italian gardens and an accomplished garden designer.

What types of gardens can we expect to visit on an Insider's Italy custom garden tour in Italy?
Like all our planning, our custom garden tours are made to order. From ancient Roman gardens to celebrated Renaissance gardens; lush botanical gardens featuring native and exotic plants; peony gardens; camelia gardens; romantic English-style gardens; historic villa gardens and gardens with remarkable mazes, heritage fruit gardens : all of the gardens we guide you to showcase Italy's rich gardening heritage.
What time of year should we visit Italian gardens ?
Some gardens are at their best in mid winter : Villa Lante, for example, an architectural landscape garden that is not reliant on flowers, or the lush-year-round Villa Mortola on Ischia, which is a joy when there is no one else there to share it with you. Some gardens are season specific : Lucca's splendid camelia gardens are a March visit. Please turn to us for information on ideal touring dates for custom Italian garden tours.

We will prebook for you when required, including with timed entry when we recommend this.
