Finding Joy in History’s Everyday

If the grandeur of Italy’s contemporary sights and architectural heritage has left you searching for something more intimate, I suggest turning your attention to the domestic objects that once filled ancient Roman homes.
Every Insider’s Italy trip reveals treasures that are often overlooked. One such treasure is the remarkable collection of everyday Roman objects at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Most visitors pass by without even knowing it’s there — yet our travelers never miss it.

I’ve never set foot in this museum without pausing in this remarkable gallery. Our Naples guide, Sabrina, shares my admiration for the collection. Her deep archaeological and academic knowledge adds rich context to what you see — and for children especially, this glimpse into Roman daily life often becomes the most memorable part of their visit.
These objects, many from Pompeii and Herculaneum and dating to the 1st century BC, reveal the rhythms of Roman domestic life with striking immediacy. Plates, jugs, beakers, and bowls — each piece merges art with utility. A simple vessel becomes an invitation: what was cooked in it, poured into it, served from it? Who was cooking ? A doorstop, a key.. who lived in the house where these were found ?
Among my favorites are the fish plates from Paestum, produced around 360–350 BC. Raised slightly on a pedestal, with a small central indentation for oil or sauce, the plates, though fully functional, were used in funerary rituals rather than at the table. As the fish was consumed, the plate’s surface — adorned with painted marine life — gradually emerged. Dolphins, sea bream, squid, tuna, rays, even the puffer fish: a vivid taxonomy of the Mediterranean, rendered in fine detail.

These objects remind us that beauty was not reserved for the grand or ceremonial. In ancient Roman life, even the everyday was crafted with care.

Such a feast ! And may I now design a journey just for you, one that opens the door to these quieter wonders — and to so many more discoveries that most travelers never see ?
