Luxury Italy Travel Reconsidered

A recent article in the The New York Times described the expanding world of ultra-high-end travel : private islands, emergency beach restyling, hotel rooms altered to eliminate unwanted colors, sunsets carefully curated to meet a guest’s specifications.
It was a fascinating and rather blood-curdling portrait of a certain definition of luxury: total control, absolute insulation, and the promise of experiences that “no one else can have.”
There is, of course, nothing wrong with comfort. Italy offers extraordinary beauty and hospitality. We believe in those pleasures.
But after 37 years of designing bespoke journeys through Italy, I have come to define luxury in a different way
Luxury is context.
Luxury is education.
Luxury is time.
Since 1989, Insider’s Italy has crafted deeply personal journeys drawing on four generations of travels of our own. Our clients — many of whom return year after year — come to us not for show, but for depth.
Each journey is conceived and created personally by me, start to finish. I work with few clients by design. There are no templates. No intermediaries and no handoffs.
Accommodations are personally known to me: owner-managed villas, Renaissance palazzi, boutique hotels and estates that offer warm, genuine welcome.
My fee reflects months of thoughtful collaboration with you and closest collaboration with trusted partners I have known as friends, many for decades.
Education is at the heart of every journey. Historians, archaeologists, art historians, and artisans curate private visits tailored to each traveler’s interests, transforming every encounter into a meaningful exchange. For families, Italy becomes more than a beautiful destination — it becomes the kind of living, immersive education that captivates children and inspires lasting curiosity.
Clients often describe their journeys as “once in a lifetime.”
And then they return.
Because it seems to me that true luxury is not about exclusivity. Instead quite the opposite: belonging.
The greatest privilege in travel isn’t having Italy conform to you.
It is, with our guidance, discovering how to enter — and savoring the pleasure of being welcomed.
