The Simplicity of Perfection

“Marjorie ?”

“Yes, Don ? ”

Don, who loves to cook, and for the last six summers has had us plan food-focused travels, is on the phone.

“How are, and where you ?”

“In Amalfi, Don, where you are supposed to be next week.”

There is a moment of silence, as Don composes himself and then says : “You know I can’t stand it, don’t you ?  Can’t stand that Italy is going on without me ?”

“I know,” I say.  “I know just how you feel. You wanted to be in your villa cooking, and taking cooking classes, and making use of the incredible ingredients that are here.”

“Yes,” said Don.  And after a minute : “But you can do something for me. Send me pictures of the beautiful things there are to eat there now, so I can dream.  And plan.  So I can look forward to them. But just the simplest things.  The ones you know I love, where the ingredients make the difference.  What Italy does so well.  My God, I wish I were there.”

So I have.

This blog is for Don, and for all of you whom I wish were with me now in one of the many great culinary locations in Italy.  And where I am more than hopeful that you will be too next year.

Yours,

Marjorie
